Amelia

Amelia was always my favourite girl's name. I really thought that if I ever had a daughter she would be called Amelia. But after 3 boys, Matt wanted to choose a girl's name and so we ended up instead with Ella Rainbow.

But this week my Ella was Amelia, if only for a day. For the last few months she has been reading about and studying Amelia Earhart. This culminated yesterday with a "living museum" presentation in her classroom. All the kids chose someone famous to study.

She got so into this project- she's read Black Beauty (Amelia's favourite book), and learned so much about her. And then we had to make the outfit. A quick trip to the thrift store and I got the pants, scarf and some fabric scraps to make her aviator hat. She insisted that I didn't try to make her a wig after the Ronald Reagan incident of last year. The hat was a much greater success. The shirt is Kit's. Boots and goggles are model's own. She even had a copy of Amelia's pilot's license in her pocket.
Doesn't she look fantastic? She loved being dressed like this. That's her book that she wrote there on her table.
But the best part about it all was that she gave the most fantastic presentation in front of the parents and other kids. Stood up on the table and spoke loud and clear and confidently. She is usually so shy and unsure of herself in situations like this, but today she ROCKED! My heart nearly burst with pride. Even her teacher was so surprised with what a brilliant job she did.
