A memorable memorial day weekend.

We had a lovely long weekend. Was I complaining about the weather just the other day? Well, the unofficial start of summer really came through, with gorgeous sunny days-4 in a row!

Saturday was a usual Saturday, running errands etc, although we did eat outside on Sat night. Oh and Ella got her ear re pierced so she is no longer a pirate. Sunday we went for lovely Sunday drive. No where special, just exploring local parts of CT that we hadn't been to before. We stopped in Ridgefield which is celebrating its 300 years this year.
A lovely little town who were right in to their flags...

cute churches and houses...

The kids had some icecream...look at the lovely pansies out the front.

And check out all the boys with their LONG hair....
We saw some cool cars ...

Some Buddhas and a peace sign...both of which I want to have in my garden some day

And crossed over a reservoir on a bridge...

Honey even enjoyed it, though she didn't get much of a walk.
It's fun playing tourist in your own back yard. I've been here for nearly 2 years and I expect all the local towns to be more or less like this one. And they are, but they are still different enough to feel like you've had a bit of a holiday.
Now, do you remember the boys with their hair??? Some how during the day both Oscar and Remi decided they wanted their hair cut SHORT! Now, I usually cut the kids' hair (and my own), but I have been struggling for the last 2 years to get Oscar to really CUT his hair. Not that I don't like it long...I actually think it looked fine the way it was...but he will not BRUSH his hair...EVER!
So here we are half way through...Isn't it soooo 80's?

And here's the finished product. What I do like about it is that I can see his gorgeous eyes again.

And Rem, who looks lovely with short hair....he's squinting 'cause he'd been hit in the eye.

Kit is even more precious with his hair, and while I trimmed it (the whole time he was saying "no!"), it's still long and messy.
This is our firework stash we bought to let off last night. They have them in the supermarket here, but they really are the lamest fireworks ever. I don't think anything gets more than about 3 feet off the ground. Compared to what I grew up with they are so pathetic, but the kids love them. So we had another lovely BBQ and let off the fireworks...
This morning, memorial day, we ummed and ahhed over whether we should go to the parade. Kit was supposed to march with the scouts, but he really wasn't interested.
And I have to say that the mornings are so lovely. I've taken to sitting on the front step having my breakfast in the sun. We let the kittens out to play in the garden while we are sitting out there watching them. Honey keeps an eye on them too.

Ella was enjoying playing with her ribbon in the breeze and I have to admit that we didn't get around to the parade...maybe next year. Last year, Ella and I were in Norway together over Memorial day, and Matt and the boys were at a pig roast down on the Jersey shore. The year before we were in Sydney...
So instead, we hung around the house. The kids were complaining that the 23 degrees C was too hot, and went over to the neighbours for a swim in their pool. This time of year the water was only about 18C, so they didn't spend a lot of time actually IN the pool. But we all felt the unofficial beginning of summer...it really feels like it's coming. We all copped a bit of sun today, we've eaten outside for the last 4 nights...and all the balls and bikes got some use over the weekend. And as it's only 3 1/2 more weeks until the end of school, it won't be long before we have 3 lovely months like this weekend.
