grr

We went out to dinner tonight- came home to 2 feet of water in the basement. ARG!

Ok, so I wrote that last night feeling very frustrated but also tired. The whole story:

So remember how I was moaning about the wet and windy weather yesterday? Well, it was REALLY wet and REALLY windy. We had been invited out to dinner at a local club. We left home around 7pm to pick up another couple who were going and had to take 2 detours because of fallen trees on the roads. Apparently in other places around town trees had taken out power lines and there had been fires. We called home to make sure the kids had torches and were NOT going to light candles.

But then we got a call from Remi to say that when he'd taken Honey out the flooding was REALLY high- and the basement was flooded. You see when a storm comes up the coast it funnels water into Long Island Sound and it pushes up a big storm surge. Plus when it rains a lot the ground becomes really sodden and the basement (which is very old and in need of repair) floods too. Combine the two and whammo. Last night I was looking at the water half filling the dryer and all manner of things floating around down there. My washing machine and dryer were submerged in water and I will have to wait probably a week for them to dry out before I can use them again (one way to get out of washing the rugby jerseys today)- if they still work. Fortunately though most of the water drained as the tide went out- there's about 2 inches left and we have a friend dropping around a pump for us in a minute.

So photos: This is right outside our front door- you can see how high the flooding got- all that debris under and around the car marks the high tide.
What's left of the water in the basement- the dryer was half full of water.
How close the water got to the house...

There is more rain forecast for today and tomorrow, but hopefully the tide won't get as high as it did.

And I'm going to up to watch the rugby game anyway. Oh and we lost an hour sleep last night because of daylight savings- just to add to it all.

  3. Sorry George but that arcweld fence across the path looks a pathetic way to keep the water out - bit King Knut-ish.
