The calm before the storm.

Wow! I vanished there for a bit. Sorry. We've been getting ready for the kids to start a new school year. Tomorrow is the big day!

That meant soaking up a couple of extra days of summer at the beach while it lasted. The weather for the last 4 days (and the forecast for the next week) has been positively autumnal. What a short summer we've had- a few good, hot weeks in August. No days over 100F. Certainly the coldest summer out of the 6 I've experienced up in this part of the world.

But that's OK, the kids are already looking forward to hiring skiis next weekend. We've bought season tickets for a mountain nearish by ready for a winter of skiing. I'm on strict orders to get myself fit so that I can join in this year. Cross your fingers and hope for some good snow!

Matt and I had a date in Manhattan on Thursday night. He was in the city anyway, for work, so I met him and we went to the Museum of Art and Design on Columbus Circle. It was interesting; I'm still trying to work out that boundary between art and craft and this place totally confused it for me again. But so fun to be out in the city at night, though. We went out to dinner afterwards and had a drink in Grand Central Station while we waited for our train. Much easier to do now that the kids are older, especially when they didn't have school the next day!

We've been cleaning up and sorting out. Covering books, and labeling everything. We've been waiting and waiting for all schedules and teacher allocations to come. They were so late this year. Remi's only came yesterday and poor Oscar hasn't even got his schedule yet. Kit got the teacher he really wanted (phew!), but poor little Ella got an unknown teacher-new to the school- and isn't sure if she knows anyone in her class. Again. Every year of school she has to make new friends-she's never been put in a class with one of her friends. Luckily she's a nice little girl.
So we're nearly organised. Taking it easy today. It feels like the calm before the storm. I know how hectic the first month of school can be. Especially once all those after school activities and school volunteer commitments are thrown into the mix! I spent yesterday sewing just to try and get as much as possible done.

So blogging may be a bit intermittent around here over the next week-we'll see. No doubt I'll get some first day photos. I think it's the start of the new school year that makes me realise how old my kids are getting...this year, a 10th grader, 8th grader, 5th and 4th graders. In 2 more years I'll have one finishing high school and no one in elementary school...and I'll be 40!!! Blimey. That's a scary thought!!! For now, I'll just think about this year.
