On my third night, on the day after Maggie and I had climbed Carnllidi, and after we'd had dinner together, I had a really fun evening. As the day was fading into night- it really does just slowly fade away there- I took my camera and went down to the Cathedral and took masses of photos. I played around with my settings. I ran around like a mad woman- down the hill, up the hill, climbing walls- just trying to get a gorgeous shot. There was no one else around and it was so peaceful. I think it was about 9:45 when I started and I was there for about an hour and totally worked up a sweat! And the light- just stunning. I warn you that you will probably get sick of photos of the Cathedral and of the ruins of the Bishop's palace which is right next door, but I just loved them and loved photographing them in their various moods.
The Bishop's palace is an amazing place. You can read a bit of the history of it here. It's run by the national trust now, and later that week, we paid our 3pounds to get in and have a look. But Maggie, who spent her childhood holidays in St. David's, used to play there with her cousins. It was just an open ruin and a place for kids to run around. I love the idea of kids playing here- the games it must have inspired, the sense of ownership that she obviously has. I had to convince her to come in with me- she didn't want to have to pay for something that had been HERS. Both the Cathedral and the palace are built in a natural valley. There are steep hills all around and there was a wall and guard towers all around. This was to protect the wealth of the church from marauders from the sea. In fact, apparently the clock tower on the church looks like a Castle when seen from the sea. I will have more photos, particularly of the palace, that I'll show you later. I hope you find it as stunning as me- I just can't get enough of it!
Well it does not look much different from back in 2002...of course in 2002 I didn't have a digital camera so could not really indulge like you obviously did. When will we see the drawings?

ReplyDeleteWell done George - they are beautiful. It is hard to accept that it was that late at night. And, yes, you caught the rose window perfectly.

Hi Georgia. Just stumbled on this page while on Maggies blog. Your photos are excellent and very atmospheric. You have captured the spirit that is "St Davids" - May it stay with you for a long time.

yum yum yum yum... loving all the pics. And good on you for having a good muck around with your camera. They are all fabulous. I would have been right there with you with that light!!!! It was awesome!
ReplyDeleteI love the round rose window and can just imagine days of knights of old etc. What a marvellous playground for Maggie as a child. I can just see Kit there in modern times with armour and a sword, racing around!!
