Sail away with me

Yesterday I chaperoned a field trip for Kit's class. 23 kids and 9 adults on this little boat out on Long Island sound. And did I mention it was cold? Serious cold. I was rugged up in my proper winter stuff-right down to my woolly boots, hat, scarf, gloves and I was still cold. The wind was blowing and it was freezing (Oscar later told me that when he was outside at school it had been snowing a little).

But it was so GORGEOUS out there. The kids were learning about plankton and bivalves etc, and I was just enjoying watching the billowing clouds, the stunning water front properties and all the strange little islands dotted everywhere.
This was taken on the way out. That's a real (for here) beach in front of them.
A sand bar with some cormorants basking in the little bit of sun that was out.The flag flapping around in the cold stiff wind. These 3 houses fascinated me. They were on a long thin island, totally exposed to the elements. That clump of trees to the left is actually another island. It made me wonder who they belong to, when do they go there? And why 3 houses so close together, but so isolated. It did start to sleet a tiny bit on the way back in, but off in the distance, toward Long Island the sun broke through and lit up the water like gold.It was a great trip. There were some very cold and tired kids at the end of our 2 hour stint out on the water. At one stage one boy was wishing for some hot chocolate, a sentiment I could share.

But now I really want to get out and explore it all in the summer. Apparently there are islands you can camp on.
