I killed the toothfairy

Little Ella lost another tooth yesterday (photo to come later) and was really mad this morning because the toothfairy didn't come. The tooth fairy has been really slack around here lately, just forgetting to do her job.

So as she was sitting there at breakfast ranting against the toothfairy, I did the most horrible thing. I just blurted it out, without thinking, "Bellie, I'm really the tooth fairy and I'm really sorry but I forgot". Immediately the words left my mouth I was horrified. I started crying, she started crying. She said that everyone at school told her but she didn't want to believe them. I said it was a little game that parents played with their children. She said (bless her), "we can still play that game though, can't we mummy?" and then later on, "it doesn't matter that you told me because I might forget. I am very forgetful."

So even though she's ok with it and we are still playing the game (the toothfairy came later on while she was getting dressed), I shall never forgive myself for taking away the magic for her. I've been the toothfairy for 9 or so years now and I used to go all out, glitter, letters etc, and now, with the one child of mine who actually wants to keep believing in all that, I couldn't even remember to take the tooth and leave some money!!!! I feel like a real scrooge.

As for this week, I just haven't been in a blogging mood. I have been working still on Kit's quilt, on sewing together my crocheted hexagons, ploughing my way through lots of old movies and once the kids get home from school, driving them here there and everywhere. Tomorrow is the school fair and I'm working 3 shifts on stalls from 10 am to 4 pm...hopefully we'll get some sun back, we seem to be stuck with 2 days nice, 4 days rain at the moment. And while April showers bring May flowers, May rain is just a pain. Hopefully I will have COMPLETED something by next week that I can share.
Oh and Happy Mother's day to all the mums out there who participate. I find it a tedious celebration and am quite happy just pretending it doesn't exist. But the kids have made things for me at school and I'll have to be "pampered" for their sake.

  1. So you don't believe in the toothfairy anymore. What sort of upbringing did you have?

OMG Georgia I wanted to cry too. It's JUST the sort of thing that I would have blurted out.

I think when you've been pretending for all those years and you don't have to pretend with the older ones anymore you sort of forget that there's still one that doesn't know. Thats all.

Don't you find that you're in more of an older childrne mode these days.

BTW when Amber told me about three years ago that she knew there was no Father Christmas I burst into tears!

I love Ella's comment re forgetting - it's like something from Alexander McCall Smith's First Ladies Detective Agency books - so beautifully simple and honest.
