A garden of our own.

I have always wanted a veggie garden of my own, but the places we've lived before just haven't had the right space for it. And after seeing and tasting the bounty from the neighbours' garden last year I was determined to have one this year.
So when Matt got home from work on Friday I declared "I want a veggie garden". To which he replied "most women your age want a baby". But as I've been there done that 4 times, Veggie garden it is.
Saturday morning we went out to the hardware store (along with the rest of Connecticut) and got shovels and forks and stuff to put in the ground to make it healthier and seeds etc etc. I had already chosen the site, based on how much sun it gets and the grass there was really lush and healthy. So we got home around 11 am and began to dig....and dig and dig and dig and well, you know. The ground is so rocky. I would say 50% or more of the soil is rocks...big rocks, and little ones. Oscar, who's been studying the geology of Long Island Sound, said that it's because it's glacial debris. Whatever...makes it hard to dig a garden.

Matt began tales of how when he was a child his father made them all dig up a huge garden bed full of rocks that they had to seive as they went. Blow that...in a year my veggie patch will probably be a construction site, so although we dug out rocks for hours, we didn't get them all out.

(the pile of rocks we dug out of the soil)

We planted seeds: coriander, basil, tomatoes, capsicum, beetroot, broccoli, carrots and sweet corn and also planted two blueberry bushes and 18 strawberry bushes.

I got out of the shower at 6.30 pm...painkillers and bed by 9.30. Woke up at 4 and everytime I moved it hurt. But I loved it!

(check out this sunset after a hard day's work)

Today we were supposed to be going to a scout "tag sale"...it began at 8.30 am and we were there at 8am...300 or so people lined up and no where to park, so we gave up on that idea and went out and got some more gardening stuff (extra long hose and flower seeds) and a bike for Oscar and Remi to share.

And stiff as I was, I was back into it today...fixing up the garden out the front, and deciding that I wanted a bigger veggie garden...so a lot of work over the next week. I have calloused hands, aching legs, back and arms, but I love the fact that I've worked so hard to make something...the kids all helped yesterday. Kit in particular...his broken arm is well and truely mended...should see him swing a pick axe!!!

Of course there is nothing much to see of my veggie garden...just some soil. I'm in the process of putting a fence around it and expanding it...but we did use some of those rocks to make a border of the flower garden out the front and it looks so much better. Photos will have to come later. Another early night to night.

I am very pleased to see that you planted tomatoes...can never have too many tomatoes...but surely there must be room for some pink-eyes, particularly for Sunday roast.
Now who would have said that?
    GOD of course

  2. I like the idea of actually planting something myself. It's good for kids to see how much work is behind the food we get in the stores. Herman has his own vegetable garden too, and he is really in to it. The soil here is so rich (and no rocks), so his salads are huge! Good luck.
