Sunday Flooding Sunday

So how was your Sunday evening? Nice and relaxing the way it should be? Or like this:This was just the beginning after rain all day. We still had the Nor'Easter pushing up through Long Island Sound coinciding with high spring tides to contend with. I appologise for the photos, but high tide hit at 10.30 pm and it was very difficult to get some photos. They all look black small, but there is some detail when you click on them. The Swans are actually swimming in our yard. The water goes all the way back to the garage, comes all the way up to our BBQ area...and actually this was taken about 9pm when I could stand next to this tree...it wasn't long before it was totally surrounded in water. Here's another view of the whole of our yard underwater...once again sorry about the photo, but here's a comparison in daylight. Up to where those few sticks on the ground are on the drive was TOTALLY covered in water...Even the mound in the middle of the turning circle was totally underwater, although we could see the very top of the black rock sticking out. We were watching little waves lapping and wondering how much further it would go... And this photo is taken from our veranda. The water hasn't come that far from the water's edge, but there's a wall there that is supposed to stop it coming up at all.
And the damage by daylight...you can see the tide mark and just how close it got to the house. What amazed me is that apart from the basement (which may have been fine if our sump pump worked), the house was fine...all the water flooded up and around the house, but at no point did it come to the house. Makes me wonder if the people who built it in 1824 knew what they were doing, or just got lucky!

This was the last photo I took of the basement last night (bottom 2 steps covered). The water has subsided today, but we'll have to get a pump and get the rest out at some stage. Fortunately we don't actually have anything much down there...the neighbours had theirs finished and have a room down there with TV, computer and all their filling...I was up at 11pm helping them carry stuff out...not the best way to get over the flu!
And we are not out of the water yet (SO TO SPEAK!!!) as we have another high tide about to hit in 2 hours and already the water has broken over the wall...oh the joys of living by the water.

Wow!!! You won't be able to keep anything precious in your basement - especially the children!
Quite nice having seven swans a swimming on the front - or back? - lawn, I imagine....
