my new toys

I finally bought myself an electric screwdriver yesterday. I've bought myself 3 over the last few years, but everytime we've moved I've had to sell them. Oscar and I had gone up to home depot to get a few things and I came home with all the fittings to keep me busy for the next few weeks. I must have drilled 20 holes yesterday, closely followed by Kit who was so excited by the sound of power tools. He had to have a few goes of course and was then lamenting that he hadn't asked for power tools for his birthday. We now have hooks for everything, everywhere, a repared door and new door handle. I still have curtain rods to put up.

I also bought a cheap sander so I can FINALLY finish sanding the dining table...something I started by hand and gave up on; leaving big patches.

So you'd have thought with my new toys that I'd be a handy woman today, but alas, no. I was inspired this morning reading this blog about using pre 1982 pennies to dye wool green. A quick search through the house revealed that we only had 23 appropriate pennies, but by that time it was too late; the dyeing bug had bitten.

A few hours later and I had this:

bags and bags of wool rovings to spin. (I put my foot in the photo so you can see how much there is). I started trying to use the natural dyes I have, but once again the only success I had was with the onion skins. So I then over dyed and did more dying with both Koolaid and dylon liquid dyes.
I was trying to replicate the colours for this:
I had started this in January but wasn't happy with the dimensions (I'm making it up as I go along) so I'd pulled it all apart. I wan't the band to be really big, so I'll need to spin more. I've already filled a bag with carded rolags ready to go.
I think it must be about time to get a spinning wheel or else it will take me forever to spin all this on a spindle. I have so many ideas for projects with all these lovely colours, but I'll have to wait until it's spun. I do like dyeing the rovings though as I can produce lovely effects by carding the colours together.

Maybe I'll get round to my other jobs tomorrow...

Now don't forget to buy a jig saw, then after some practice on nice thin pieces of wood, three ply or similar, making animal shapes and other things to screw together with your screw driver you will be able to cover them with all those bits of wool and stuff, your other passion, but most importantly you will have used your power tools, and apart from taking dogs for walks hardly anything is better than power tools, oh perhaps drawing. But perhaps not really.
