Little by little

I have to admit to being a bit exhausted after the hustle and bustle to get things done of last week. So things are moving at a slightly slower pace around here. Not to say that I'm not getting things done, but that the focus is a little different.

For a start, I spent Friday afternoon organising the spice cupboard. We brought up boxes and boxes of spices and they had to go somewhere. All kinds of boxes everywhere, and I spent ages on the spice cupboard. Our shed was finished on Friday (although we didn't find where the builder had left the key until Sat). Saturday was spent putting up shelves and carrying up all the plastic tubs full of clothes and memorabilia. I feel like I just want to find a place for everything and that I can't bear to be living in chaos anymore.

So yesterday, when I couldn't find anywhere to put our Mac (which is staying with us for the summer and then being shipped by air to Singapore), I built something to fit the bill.

I've always loved the look of home offices under stairs or in cupboards, and this big double cupboard was poorly utilized. So using only wood that I already had, I made this little desk up. It took a lot of thinking about how to stabilise it all, and while it may not be entirely level, I'm claiming it's just the slope of my old house floors.

The doors shut, but I do have to move the chair. I put a shortened hanging rail on the other side, and that is also where we keep the vacuum, broom and mop etc. And when the desk is being used, you can't see that stuff. Later it can still be used as a shelf, or a little writing desk.

The other slightly not really necessary thing that I did was painting the shelves above my laundry alcove. The washer and dryer are in the worst place; in the thorofare between the kitchen and the little green lounge room. It drives me crazy as there is always washing on the floor blocking the door. When I painted the green room, I didn't bother painting this alcove as it is usually covered by curtains. It was still salmon pink and really dark. When I pulled everything off the shelves to organise them, I decided to paint it all white, and it looks so much better. (I didn't pull out the machines, just stuck the brush down the side). I probably will put the curtains back up (I can't add doors as the machines stick out further than the walls), but even so, it looks brighter and cleaner and makes me happier.

Today we've spent the day organising the shed(s) a bit more. (do you like my buoys hanging on the big shed?...a little bit of our house in CT...they would wash up in the many storms and floods that we had).

It's a good shed. We need to lay some more gravel out the front.

Lots of room still. Gradually more things will make their way up. The window is for light only (my request) and doesn't open...and it's hot up there. It could probably double as a sauna.

At least we can relax in the hammock under the tree when we need an afternoon rest.

So things go slowly, slowly. At some point I need to bite the bullet and get back into painting the outside of the house, but I feel like I need to have inside more organised first.

  1. Wow, well done. I have a frend who does does a lot of work from home and he is often working on his computer in his cupboard when I visit.

Your shed looks terrific, but don't forget the buoys are called booyies,

  3. Dad, back from Bendigo LaTrobe campus, learning about using glass etc from ceramic jock at that campus...anyway you are doing fantastic work, hope you have at least a couple of weeks to enjoy it "finished" before you head off.
On another matter Bendigo LaTrobe Visual Arts course may be worth Oscar exploring, a great town and I suspect a fabulous campus with lots of alternatives (photography, graphic design etc) and very well equipped.
    love
